The cows in our dairy are all milked by robots, giving them the freedom to choose how often they are milked. All our cows are born on the farm. We love seeing all their individual personalities develop as they grow from calf to cow, nurtured by the Clackmae team every step of the way.
There are 2 kinds of beef animal on the farm. They are the bull calves from the dairy cows and are either pure Holstein with black and white patches or Hereford crosses with a black or brown body and a white face. They spend their whole lives on the farm before being sold through the local farming co-operative.
New to Clackmae in 2020 was our pick your own pumpkin patch. All the pumpkins are grown by us from seed, working their way from our greenhouse to the patch for picking in October. Each year we grow more varieties to add to the fun on the patch for everyone.
We grow different types of grass to suit the needs of our animals throughout the year. Some of the grass is harvested for silage and the rest is grazed in the fields. We also grow wheat and barley. Some of this is harvested for making wholecrop silage for our animals to eat and the rest is harvested for the grain and straw which is all used on the farm.
Along with our farm animals, Clackmae is home to an abundance of wildlife due to the diverse habitats across our farmland. From reedbeds and burns, woodlands and drystone dykes, to hedges and hills there is no shortage of choice for local wildlife.
We source as much of our energy requirements as possible from renewable sources. Our dairy is powered by a wind turbine and a biomass boiler provides the farm with heat.
